What started as a side project whilst modelling overseas has now turned into a platform of exercising tips, blog posts and recipes focused on healthy eating and balance - made simple. Keep It Cleaner is an online platform started by fit foodie models and friends Laura Henshaw and Steph Claire Smith.
In this Goal Digger interview, we spoke with Laura Henshaw about her journey from model to law student and healthy-lifestyle advocate, and the importance of hard work for all the opportunities she has created for herself.
Tell us a bit about what you do and your journey to get there.
I run a health and wellness website with my best friend Stephanie Smith called Keep it Cleaner. I started the health blog whilst I was modelling overseas three years ago and was so humbled by the traction I was getting from my recipes. Steph and I then came together to create a healthy recipe eBook called ‘Keep it Clean’ and we got such an amazing response we then went on to found KeepItCleaner.com as we wanted a place to be able to share new content regularly and create more engagement with our followers.
How do you set goals and do you follow a specific process?
I like to set one big goal and then set small goals to tick off along the way. There is nothing more disheartening than working towards something that seems so big and impossible to reach. I set daily, weekly, monthly and long-term goals and make sure they push me out of my comfort zone but are also achievable and realistic.
What do you do when you hit a roadblock or things aren’t going right?
While sometimes I want to throw my phone out the window and crawl up into a ball, I know that giving up will not get me anywhere! I have learned so much from my mistakes and failure, and while at the time it may seem impossible I always remind myself that every problem has a solution. What I find works best for me is taking a few deep breaths and just working it out. I am currently studying law at university and I find it has really helped me with thinking though my problems and finding appropriate solutions.
What is one habit you credit with getting you to where you are now?
Hard work. I have been working since I was sixteen as I was always taught that if I wanted something I needed to work for it.While at the time this was the worst thing ever because I had to make sacrifices, I am so grateful now because I have learned nothing comes without hard work. I don’t wait for opportunities to come to me, I get out there and try to find them myself.

What keeps you awake at night?
At the moment- nothing! I have a new rule with myself to turn off all work at 8:30pm. That way I can sleep without being stressed about work.
I used to work up to the second before bedtime, which was affecting my sleep because I could never switch off. Switching off is essential to my productivity – I need to do it or I will go insane!
Who or what inspires you the most?
The biggest inspiration for me is our beautiful subscribers and followers. Their messages and feedback about how we have helped them through hard times in their lives or motivated them to be healthier and happier are probably the most inspiring things in the world.
I am so lucky to be doing what I love and to be doing it with my best friend. Our passion for Keep it Cleaner is what has lead to our dedication to the brand. We want it to grow in every way possible so we can continue to spread our message about health and self-love.
